While many of my cichlids were purchasd when they were teenagers (6") or nearly adults (8"), this guy is one of my proud complete grow outs. I bought him nearly 3 years ago when he was a real squirt-- about 2". He grew to about 6" in a 55, then to about 10" in a 110, and has grown about 5 more inches (and gotten a lot thicker-- he's about 3" thick) this past year in my 350. He eats about 20 large cichlid pellets (pellets are big) every other day. (I feed fish every other day to help keep water parameters better and extend time between water changes).
I've been keeping cichlids for 20 years (I'm old-- probably older than all of you!), and I've found that the keys to accelerating/maximizing growth are:
1. Clean water (by far the most important);
2. Avoid lots of stress on fish from other tank inhabitants (fish won;t grow if being chased all day); and
3. appropriate tank size, i.e., not too small; too big is ok.
