I heard BGK are pretty slow growers.. don't know how true this is..
How long has it grown in 3.5 years?
& is it male or female? maybe you can breed it to continue its legacy.. ;)
i don't know the sex... and i think they are not able to breed in aquaria setting... captivity..and you probably need a huge tank for beginners.. and then to find a mate...... he started off a mere 4 inches and now 12+ inches...

That took quite a long time to grow 8"... but nice looking fish nonetheless.. :)
Actually it grew quite fast... but then they slow down...and creep into growth.... he is twice as big as any i have owned... so slow growth now is fine.... thanks....

thanks ... your doing great at 7 inches... he will grow...

I’m as impressed with your photography skills as I am the Knife! Without the flash 99% of the pics I take of mine are too blurry to make out what it is and the ones with flash are… well too flashy :P

Mine is over 5 years old… went from 4~9” in about a year… from 9~12’ in about a year… from 12” to 13/14” in over 3 years… I haven’t put him on a tape measure in several years (he was 12” then) but he is a definitely more then 2/3’s of the depth (front to back) of the 125 gal tank he is in…

That side of the tank for reference:

Mine has been raised with mid aggressive Cichlids (as docile as Geos, as aggressive as Gold Saums and many species in between) and has never had any issues with them with the exception that the BGK will attack any spawning site in quest of fertilized eggs or fry. Regardless of how tough the Cichlids are… I’ve used him to prevent reproduction with several pairs (Geos, Convicts, Dempseys) but his uncontrollable lust for eggs/fry might get him in trouble with tougher tank mates.

It’s not too often we see these guys as adults. The lack of examples over 12" makes me wonder why they are so commonly claimed to reach 18~24” in home aquaria :P

Your looks real nice RD! Congratts.

Thank you as well...

Mine spent his first 6 months or so in a 125 gallon... then next 3 years or so in a 300 gal (6' round @ 2' deep Rubbermaid)... and the last year and a half in a 125 gallon tank... So his growth became extremely slow even in a 300 gal...

I've never hand fed mine or done anything to directly feed him. He was raised with Oscars and mostly ate teh scraps that they dropped (Hikari or NLS pellets)...

Once I moved him in with neater Cichlids he eats anything left over on the bottom and often comes to the surface to eat with the Cichlids. (Still NLS or Hikari pellets)

With the exception of him attacking nesting sites... The Cichlids pretty much ignore him and when he swims around the tank (including during feeding) the Cichlids seem to not understand what he is and simply avoid him or wait for him to move elsewhere (he moves around very quickly).
