My big fish all hiding?

Cichlids dig - it's natural as they mature. I have a Vieja hybrid alone in a tank and he is digging like crazy, as well as displaying to his reflection in the glass. I'm guessing the sight of a 'rival' has him all worked up.

Since the Lyonsi just took over he may be still showing he is boss, and the others are staying clear.the syn could have eggs in her dugout spot and is protecting, even if he is not interested, or he prepared a spot for the young if they paired

Lyonsi died. Tanks all cool again, fish swimming around like normal. What would make a fish die like that? Swim bladder disease?
