Hey guys I live hear in Newport beach, Orange County. Fishing is my life. But I went on a dive trip to Catalina last week on my boat Hoping for some White sea bass or yellow tail. Instead I speared one of the biggest california halibut I have seen.

Now im a deck hand on a open party sportfishing boat out hear so i have seen a lot of halibut. And just to give u an idea legal size is 22 inches. And the largest California halibut ever cause was 50 somthing pounds.

This guy was easily over 40 inches and weighed 38 pounds.

quite a trophy in my book, i have never caught one that big on rod and reel ever.

almost lost him it was a crazy story. but none the less great spear placement and I was just barely able to drag him to the surface with me and get him in the boat.

oh and he was in 30 feet of water and i free dive no scuba.

thank you most people I have shown are like thats a lame halibut. But they dont realize its not a Pacific Halibut which dwells far north in Alaska and reaches sizes of 400 pounds but a California Halibut. Two totally diff species

grill some... bake some, and the rest is going to my babies.(food for my fish)

this fish has to be more than 20 years old. When i filleted him he had fat surrounding his meat. FAT, iv filleted hundreds of halibut at work and thousands of other fish. never have i found one with fat like beef.

oh and probably just lightly season it with some lemon pepper and garlic salt

wow very nice, looks like it will taste good to

This is a very cool fish...

Free diving 30' is incredible!

Great catch!

Cheers!

According to the mods of this sub-forum you cant post that picture as that is in "bad taste". Remember the English are super sensitve when it comes to how you harvest fish even though spearing a monster like that is more sporting then sitting on the bank of a pond under an umbrella ever will be! :irked:

Great catch man!

I thought it was common knowledge that there are several species of halibut. Guess not. It's still a nice accomplishment especially free diving.
