According to the mods of this sub-forum you cant post that picture as that is in "bad taste". Remember the English are super sensitve when it comes to how you harvest fish even though spearing a monster like that is more sporting then sitting on the bank of a pond under an umbrella ever will be! :irked:

Great catch man!

What? I sure hope you're kidding. If someone's that sensitive they need to go somewhere by themselves, sit under a tree and cry so they don't bother the people with common sense.

Anyway, very cool halibut and that must have been crazy dragging that up from 30 feet down.

nice fish

Wow i believe spearfishing is just as sporty as normal fishing. Id like to see any of those sensitive fruits who are against spearfishing free dive up to a fish and shoot it without spooking it. pffffft.

anyways thanks guys i was pretty proud also.

What happend was i was at italian gardens (a cove at catalina) and i dove down without my spear to just check out the bottom halfway down this beast was laying there so i steadied my heart rate, and floated to the surface, grabbed my inshore gun and took a deep breath and sank. slowly. once i fell into range i aimed right at the tip of his jaw cause i knew my gun shot high. pulled the trigger and BAM. the popping of the spring levers on the gun made me blink but once i opened my eyes i noticed my shaft was buried deep with in his gill plates but not all the way through since he was laying on hard bottom.
He turned around and began puttering away. i could tell he was pretty F**ked up. but i wasnt gonna get this fish unless the shaft was pushed all the way through his head to open up the butterflies. So without even going to the surface to get breath (since my line wasnt long enough to get to the surface) i dove all the way to him and jabbed to shaft through his head, forcing the butterflies open. then shoved one hand in his gills and turned him up right to bring him to the surface. He was dead by then

Nice catch dude!!

well heres MY opinion. the fact that its a RULE that i cant put my thread of a fish i speared is offensive to me. Lemme clarify. I EAT EVERYTHING i spear and only spear by regulations if I think a fish may be short of its legal size limit i wont shoot it. So i hate to break it but foul hooking a fish and releasing it bloody is just as inhumane if not more so then me spearing then stabbing its spine if still alive.

so mods my bad i didnt know spearfishing....something done so much in my state by the beach where i live was inhumane and not allowd to be posted. go ahead shut the thread down but im making sure i get my voice out. Hook and line fishing is more invasive and devastating to the enviorment than spearing and choosing what your gonna spear to bring home.

Nice catch! I didn't realize that's what Halibut looks like. Damn this land-locked life of mine.

To defend the mods a little, in that thread one of them said they were more offended by bowfishing where the fish was usually discarded. You are right pretty much all fish speared are carefully chosen, then harvested and eaten.

I must admit I dont mind bowfishing for trash fish either. The ONLY fish I couldnt kill in that mater would be a large alligator gar just becuase of the fish's age. Id merk the hell out of any carp, buffalo, smaller gar or other trash fish if given the chance!

lol.... i agree that alligator gar bowfishing made me sick. But it just bugs me that someone would put free dive spearfishing in the same catagory.
