did your fish all survive?
The yellowish colour from wood will disappear after several waterchanges.
If you get some wood that has been in a tank allready, nothing will prob happen.

That's why I'm against rocks in most my tank's.
The tank's that they are in are very carefully placed.

I am too paranoid to stack any rocks in my tank. The tannin from drift wood usually goes away after several soakings, and it isn't bad for fish, you just have to keep an eye out for the PH.

The crack from corner to corner in that tank looks alot like a stress fracture to me. Are you sure a rock hit it. If there was any twist in the piece of furniture that tank is sitting on it could have caused the problem. Dressers and the like are a pretty bad stand for a aquarium as they lack the structural support needed to carry the weight of a aquarium. They can sag irregularly causing a twist or lean to their surface which is the most common cause of failure in an aquarium.

Sorry to hear this. But also glad to see you haven't given up. I have several rocks in my 55g, but they are moreso along the bottom and any stacked rocks have been secured well enough to remain stable. But I also don't have big enough fish to knock them over. My biggest is my Crenicichla Sveni, who is only 6.5". For now atleast.

okay, so i've learned never to stack rocks in a tank...

just set up a new (well redone, so new to me) 93 gal tank 2 days ago. scavanged some local rocks for decor. washed them and put them in last night. all was well. made a 2-tiered stonehenge-ish type deal in the middle. looked VERY cool (in my and my boyfriend's opinion). seemed sturdy enough. i lodged all the rocks well, or so i thought.

anyways, our wake up call at 7:30 this morning was not our 8 month old daughter, but rather the sound of a terrible crack and gushing water. not sure what happened exactly, but i suspect the 8-10" pleco might have had a little freak-out twitch and hit the top tier, thus knocking it over, which hit the front pane of glass, which then shattered.

ugh... an hour and a half of water clean up. there was about 2 inches of water pooling in a corner of the living room. the entire laminate floor is pooched. water and sand EVERYWHERE.

note to self: don't be a dumbass.

So sorry for your mishap! Glad to hear you're still in the game though. Mistakes happen.. like when I killed all of our feeder guppies, I ran them under hot water, thinking it was cold... how stupid was that! lol

As mentioned earlier in the thread, purigen will remove tannins.
In fact, it will remove tannins rapidly (overnight) and it keeps them away for many months between recharges (I'm at like 4 months.)

yeah, i was going to go with driftwood, but then i read and was told that it stains the water yellowish. so, i opted against it. is there a way to prevent that? (i was just going to scavange some wood, soak it, etc etc. i'm not that keen on spending a fortune buying wood from a store)

clean up's done... sort of. i keep finding sand everywhere still. surprisingly the boyfriend is willing to fix the tank and get it set up for another go (i'm the fish lover here. i brought the fish into the relationship ). didn't think he'd want to, seeing as he's the one who just put in the laminate flooring last winter that's now only good for firewood. hopefully next time it'll last longer than 2 days. but on the upside, the fish all survived. my severum's a little beaten and bruised, but they're all good plus, it should be an easy fix.

Pre-soak/Rinse any type of wood prior to entering it into your tank and you shouldn't receive any/as much yellowing. As for your tank and fish, I'm very glad to hear your husband's in to fix it after ruining his floor and also that all the fish made it. Your idea of stacking the rocks seemed like a nice design, perhaps buying a plastic version next time? Glad to hear the positives out of the negative..
