My Bluegill

I have 3 Bluegills in with 6 Red-eared Sunfish for a year and a half. They were only 2-3 inches when I got them, but now the largest is about 7 inches and the rest in various sizes. They get along well. A lot of fake fighting to defend territory, but not much real contact. They've gotten really dark. Not much color, but I don't care about that, as this is a North American biotope setup. I'm moving them from the 90 they grew up in to a new 215 we just set up. In with them will be some Golden Shiners and a large crayfish. Plants will be water lilies and other native plants. (I had a pickerel in with them, but they eat faster then the pickerel so I ended up feeding him out of a net.)
 
whoa wheres the blue color on his head? I just caught a bunch of those fish at a local stream. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE FINS they sure ar pointy. They get prett big too. The stream was full of blue gill and bass! Just letting you know, maybe you can put a bass with him
 
That's really cool, I've always wanted to keep a bluegill. What do you feed it?

Everything, they eat insects worms, shrimp, catfood, pellets, small fish, bread, and even "M+M"s. I dropped one in a tank accidently and it never hit bottom, they are true piggies.
 
im a fan of the natural setup as well. I have one big gill and three smaller ones, all caught from the local park. they have personality, and r tough. my big gill punks the pbass all the time even tho the pbass are almost 2x as big. when i get a 1000+ setup i want a whole school of bluegill, along with a few largemouth smallmouth and maybe even a striper, that would be cool.
bluegill love crickets its fun watching them come up for it
 
I really want to keep some sunfish. How big of a tank do you need for one?

29g would do for one... 55g for a couple

they're essentially North American convicts.

You could consider them north american convicts however male bluegill can get 8"+ and weigh in at a pound. So I would say a 55 gallon tank is minimum for one. The extra swiming room in the 55 gallon would make a big difference IMO.

You could keep a redbreast sunfish in a 29 gallon for life. However bluegill,redear,warmouth etc need atleast a 55 gallon.
