Hello MFK,

After all the great advice I got from the experts here (and one other forum), I have finally got a lovely pair of baby Gars.

They are a little over 4 inches each and are absolutely beautiful!

They are currently housed in a 48"x18"x18" tank with my 1ft Silver Arowana.

The Silver Aro is being very gentle and (after nearly 48 hours) has not troubled the Gars. (I have a spare 2ft tank ready to transfer the Gars should there be any trouble.)

I can't ID these at this size. The LFS guys in Bombay (India) call ALL Gars "Alligator Gars", which I don't think these are.

Can you ID these?

PS: I plan to move these three fish (Silver Aro and 2 Gars) to a 180 gal. in a month or two.

very young floridas.
and at that size(really any size) keeping it with a silver aro is a big no no. highly dangerous to the fish

you should just put the gars straight up in your spare tank. that silver is too big and is gonna take out those gars when your not looking. the best size to throw them in with your silver is 8" inches and above. i would not risk it you have some nice look baby gars there.

I have the same fish, I also think it is a long nose gar. However Florida's are so common that the moment you mention LFS, its labeled a Florida. Or maybe the sticky website above on ID is wrong.

Looks like baby Floridas. Often baby (2-4") gar look like longnose simple because the body is so small. They will grow into their snout quickly and the ID will be very easy then.

looks like a florida to me im not 100% but if its a long nose then the snout should mesure twice the space from the corner of the mouth right infront of eye ball to the gils nice looking gars

I remember when my gar were that size... they grow fast as long as they keep eating. Beautiful fish man
