My Brand New Baby Gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
one word of warning, if u dont want to have to feed them feeder fish there intier life then start them on crickets and then work them on to jumbo krill and then on to large pellets, thats what iv done with mine and they seem pretty content

It's been 5 days and the Gars are going great.

I am feeding them (live, cleaned) blood worms. It is an absolute joy to watch them stalk the prey and then snap their little jaws to catch these blood-worms.

However, for the past two days (due to an extreme heat-wave in the area), there seem to be little or no blood-worm stocks in 6-7 of the LFS in my part of the city.

I have had to resort to buying little black Mollies for the Gars. (These are from the same store which I buy blood-worms on a daily basis and they keep their fish clean and disease free.)

I was impressed with the way these Gars "hunt" blood-worms. However, that was not even close to the experience of seeing them stalk and hunt mollies.

This weekend, (i.e. tomorrow) I plan to drive to this "Vermiculture" store about an hour away to get earthworms for all my fish. (I have a Malawi tank, this "mini-monster" tank (Silver Aro, 2 Gars) and another small community tank.)

If this works out, I will not feed "live feeder fish" to the Gars (or the Aro). I know feeding "feeder fish" is not a good practice.

(Freeze Dried Crickets are ridiculously expensive in India.)

In the long run, (for the Gars) I plan to switch to market prawns and other assorted seafood (squids, other fish/invertebrates etc.) which is what I am currently feeding my Silver Aro. Hopefully, one day, when they are large enough, I will have the heart to switch them to pellets.

Regards,
Sid

Updated pics after 3 weeks of getting them.

As you can see, one of them is eating a little more than the other. Hence is a bit bulkier.
