thanks wolf & one749 for clearing it up.

onion-1; what does he sound like me? if not, i take it as an insult

The validity of your "friend's" question is similar to that of many of yours.

yeh pump dont do squat except push water. unless u get one with a specially shaped impeller hence y even an fx5 has to be 20cm below the water level to work. u can have ccanister sti above the aquarium but u need to place a pum in the aqquarium that would feed the canister and then the canister would return the water without a pump runnign through gravity.

k thanks amehel0

lol, I was just kidding around. I don't diss people for what they don't know.

hey, we are all here to learn. No harm done.

Do either of you understand a siphon? Do you need a pump to suck water out of the tank into a bucket with a tube? No. Gravity pulls water down the tube into the bucket and the suction of the water flowing down the tube pulls water out of the tank.

The pump in your canister filter pumps water back into the tank and causes a siphon to suck water out of the tank into the filter.
In a normal hang on back filter the pump is pulling water out of the tank and the excess water is simply overflowing back into your tank.

haha thanks shadowbass.

Since it's a closed loop system the water that's coming out will create a small vacuum that will pull water in.
It's a combination of siphon (gravity) and vacuum.

Without gravity, the water wouldn't even flow down, so of course it's gravity fed:D

thanks rallysman; will message him right now
