My carpintis has just laid eggs. Help and advice please?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They have been great parents so far and have seemed to be a perfect pair with no aggression what so ever between them. They have rarely left the eggs alone and have there nest ready to transfer the fry to, so fingers cross the male doesn't eat them.

They have now started moving the wigglers to inside an ornament which they have been preparing for the last week or so which is looking promising. I will try and post some pictures if I can but they look like they will be hard to photograph. lol

I have removed about 20-30 wigglers and put them in a homemade egg tumbler like device in my community tank and left approx 200 in the tank with the parents. I just wanted to play it safe in case the parents got hungry.

I have been doing a little reading and am a bit unsure about infusoria. Do I need to use it or will microworms be fine once they are free swimming?

The fry have been free swimming for about a day now and have been feeding microworms and crushed tropical flakes mixed with tank water. How often should I be feeding them and should I be doing more frequent water changes?

Thanks

here is a little pic of the fry.

i have always used crushed flakes and some powdered food-first bites(hikari).you can feed 2-4 times a day-but watch out for over-feeding each time, cause they can't eat much.your right about water changes. i shoot for 50% or less on the fry tanks.once a week is good, but some keepers do more than once a week.try to be careful of WC water temp, add declor.

I usually do a 20% water change on all my tanks every 3 days so I am guessing that should be enough then. I really didn't expect to end up with so many fry any ideas on what to do with them :ROFL:I am guessing that there is approx 200 with the parents and about the same amount which I have moved to a tank in my garage. Will some slowly die off or do I have to do something about it?

The fry with the parents will most likely get eaten when they are ready to spawn again.the others you can try to grow to about an inch, then post on MFK for sale or free.you can also check with LFS, maybe would give you store credit

I have already spoken with one LFS and they said to bring them in at about an inch and they would work something out. They are pretty good to me and have paid up to 50% of their sale price for some fish before, which I think seems pretty good.
