Haha...yeah they do lay around. That is why I am hoping with 3 ill end up with at least one of them moving around when I am watching. Lol. Adding another 2 nigers to the mix also.

Right now as I am watching the tank all 3 are crusing around for food.

Haha, that's funny. They are pretty much larger raphael catfish - light haters and thorough hiders. But we seem to know little of them when they get some size, 1.5'-2', whether these traits subside and how much.

My favorite Doradidae of all time.
They are so personal and loving. I raised one from 2'' and he was one of the most friendly catfish I had. He let me handfeed him near his cave, he'd come out and eat from my hand and let me pet his underside. He would swim to the front when he saw food in my hands. He was hands down the largest fish in my fish room when he passed during the horrific snow storm in 2011 in of all months, OCTOBER! I was so devastated and upset, it took me a long time to get over and still to this day it gets me.
He was a fish I was proud to show off and he was like my own cat.
Irwini are hard to find up here, and my LFS got two in and he was the biggest. He was expensive, but boy was he the best $75 I've ever spent, I loved him. Got him at 2'' in 2009ish and by 2011 he was 10-11''. He ate a lot!
All of these threads are bringing back my Irwini memory and now I have that feeling I want another one.... but I best wait until my bigger tank is here.
I also had an Oxydoras niger and when I tried to hand feed and get personality out of him he ran and hid in the opposite direction. They are my 2nd favorite. The niger and Irwini shared the same cave but the Irwini quickly outgrew the niger. The niger was 5'' in 2011, the irwini 10-11''. The niger survived the storm in freezing water, the only fish that lived besides a datnoid and jade goby.
Here is Mr. Cuddles, my old Irwini.
The first pic is the feed me stance he gave me each day.

You should try a P. Granulosus with them. They have similar ripsaw spikes down the side. Mine is way more active than the Irwini. They do get a bit larger though.

Mine was real active until it got to around a foot long then got lazy. They can be moody with decor changes also.

hows the growth rate? I got 2 small 3 inchers recently. One has grown already I got it a week prior to the 2nd one. Hope to try and get it to 10 inches Didn't see to much info on them. Seems people sour on the hiding and somewhat slow growth, but man they look good.
