ok I am not the only one here then with this problem.. I have lost 2 royal clowns now and they both did the same thing.. I have to ask you a few questions and figure this out.. did you have any hint of ammonia? also what water conditioner do you use and have you used any ammonia remover? and one more thing did you ever find any pink fleshy looking things in your tank around when he stopped eating? Both of my clowns stopped eating then they started swimming in circles and a few days later died. One of mine was about 6 inches and the other 11" I can't figure out how I am killing these damn things.. sorry for the loss but lets figure this out.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate all extremely close to zero or zero, Pretty much I only use AQ Salt (half dose) once an awhile an Stresscoat with water changes, Only ammonia remover I use is Ammo-Lock (only if there a serious Ammonia Spike).

Sorry Never any Pink fleshy things. He started rejecting certain foods afew weeks ago, stopped eating completely bout a week ago. When I saw him this mourning he was swimming like he was drunk (bumping into ****, floating a bit, darting to the bottom, with the occasional corkscrew twirl).

Frankly the CK Lastest the longest outve everyone Ive ever kept. Most of my early ones Jumped out (but those deaths yrs ago I considered my fault, as I was just starting an bought any cool fish I saw, not caring bout temperment).

His death has me Mind boggled as he pretty much starved himself to death.

my problem is I had a very slight ammonia spike and was treating it with amquel. My new ammonia alert was saying no ammonia while my liquid test said .25 ppm. I kind of think the amquel did somthing as he stopped eating and did the exact thing yours did bumped around and occasionally twirled. also close to the end it was like he was having a seizure.. very strange. plus I found a fleshy pink substance in the tank right before stoped eating. My clown loaches never showed any ill affects and they are supposed to be more picky with water than CK's.. if anyone has any similar experiences please share.. And joeytoe keep brainstorming and see if we can't figure this out.. thanks for your time

My CK looked like it was "coughing" at times, Mouth open all the way an a violent shake for a like 5 seconds. Ive never used Amquel, just AQ's Stresscoat, ammo-lock, an seachem Prime (as it does alot more).

ok now we are getting somehwere mine did the same thing and I think the violent coughing is where the pink substance came from. I think he coughed it up.. Also ammo-lock workes the same as amquel. and i to use prime the most when doing water changes and as an ammonia remover sometimes.. I think somthing in these chemicals are affecting the knives but I don't know which one. I can rule out stress coat as i don't use it.. were you using an unusual amount of any of these chemicals shortly before you noticed any problems? I really think we are on to somthing here about clown knives. i really hope we can narrow this down to somthing.. Kind of exciting it just sucks we both had to lose fish before this point.

Typically I only half dose everything (that usually gets deadly levels in check) Stresscoat is good for water changes (as it removes Chlorine chlorimine, an promotes the slime coat). Prime I really only use on the Initial setup (before cycling) an in a true Catastrophy (as it removes everything). Ammo-lock typically Ill use if Ive gone away for a day or two an keep keep a eye on things.

I have a feeling Knives can sense a build up of all these over time, an over time it could get to be to much for them. Not sure though.

hmmm...i recently lost a 9in silver aro, that did everything you guys have been talking about. swimming odd, coughing, bumping into things, etc...however, he did have an appitite, ate just about anything, azoo sticks, gutloaded shrimp and lake smelt, hikari sticks, worms... he stopped eating for around 2 days, but eventually started again...so i stopped worrying. water par were all good, with a slight .5ppm nitrite (not very high at all). i'm sketchy about getting another as to i don't really know why mine died, did weekly 25percent water changes, checked pars every other day...i also have a 10in CK,but he did not show any of those signs that the aro had...but now i'm starting to get worried again...i use prime and arowana live water (adds BB)...never had the pink stuff though.

Sorry to hear that. Always tough to lose a cool fish. You getting another?

I think they are sensitive to some of these chemicals also. I doesed a full tank dose of prime with every water change instead of dosing the actuall gallons of water I had changed. I think there is definatly something to this. Maybe more people will chime in on this with their experiences..
