my clown loach game

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about getting rid of big loaches if you need to. Unless there is a major change in the hobby, people will be all over them as soon as you post an ad.

They are super slow growers. I've had two of mine for I think over 3 years now and they've gone from about 1.5" to a little over 4". I added 4 more from 4 to almost 6" last summer and they haven't shown any obvious growth (haven't actually measured since I acclimated them though, I'm sure they've grown a little)

As far as size, I have never noticed any growth rate on clown loaches. They have to be one of the slowest growing fish. I wouldn't believe it if I ever saw all of them get a foot. And tell me how hard would it be to give away a foot long clown loach. Most people I know would love to get one. Its not like its a pacu or rtc, you just don't see them around. I think a 150 gallon will hold a lot of foot long loaches, as long as I update my filtration.

I would dim the lights but I am already running the lowest lights I can, my plants wouldn't like it any lower. I think I only have 4 3 foot t12s.

I was with you until that sentence. A 150 will hold only a few big boys & you should never keep a fish that fast & agile & big in a 150. If your clowns get anywhere even remotely close to 1 foot (& you haven't died of old age yet), SELL them & get some new little guys to go in there.

A fast and agile fish shouldn't have a problem in a tank 6 times their length long, 1.5 times their length deep, and 2.5 times their length high. I don't see this as being a problem ever but what does everybody else think?
How many foot long clown loaches in a 6 foot 150? Lets not worry about unknown water quality issues, they are easily dealt with filtration and auto water changing systems, we will focus on swimming room.

Based on how active my 6 4-6" clowns are in my 150, I would feel bad keeping any 12"ers in it. I'm hoping by the time mine are that big (which will be a LONG time), I'll have either a huge tank or some sort of indoor pond or something

Again, I would bet that "how many 1-footers can I fit in here?" will never actually be an issue for you, but we can play that game... Depending on the dimensions of the actual tank, I would say 2 or 3 10"+ CL's in a 150 tall would be plenty. You could have another 6 or 8 large CL's in there with them, but not 1-footers. A 150 wide would be better & maybe could fit 2 more whoppers. For filtration, I think an FX5 & a 2nd smaller canister if I had cash, but I'm cheap so I'd probably DIY a sump for it...Maybe add a mid-size canister to the sump for good measure.

I've had 12 clown loaches a long time ago and I NEVER NEVER NEVER saw ALL of the them at the SAME TIME. I would count and always be at least one short. I broke down the tank about a year and a half later and had the same 12 but they never would all be out no matter what.

i second that! given up counting since i got past the 8 mark. now got 14 and struggle to count 11 at a time! also mine are in a 4x2x2 with the daddy at about 6" and i feel they could do with a 6x2x2. I also feel a pond would be good for a footer!
