My biggest tank is 250 gallons, and is more or less dedicated to Central Americans, with a few exceptions...
Just took these last night.
The Dovii and Midas pairs never make contact unless one of them invades the other's breeding area.
The Dovii as of now is the 'number 2' dominant fish in the tank, though it really avoids messing with the Red Texas, male Synspilum and the Male Barred Midas. The male red terror as of late has been challenging him, which is a bit unusual considering he is the least dominant fish in the tank, with the exception of the tiger Datnoid and female Red Terror.
Very little contact is ever made between any of the fish. I got rid of the Tuba as it probably the most aggressive cichlid (but luckily one of the least dominant) fish in the tank. It constantly harrassed the three weaker fish in the tank to no end.
We will have to see how long this continues. Surprisingly, the Doviis have yet to breed since I removed about 10 fish or so from the tank, though they continue to guard their original territory and seem even less skittish than they were before I did the changeover. The midas will keep alternating females anywhere from 3 days to 1 week after a batch hatches. He will chase off a female once the other female invades the territory and tries to entice him into breeding.
By far, one of my most enjoyable tanks I have had the pleasure to own. Need a background for it (any ideas? - suggestions more than welcome!). I also need to fix a leak that is coming from the frame at the top of the tank. Really annoying the heck out of me, but since I have no place to move my fish and I use an overflow with a sump, this could be awhile..
