They are residents of the rocky shorelines of Lake Tangyanika. They are used to a lot of water movement and highly oxygenated water coming from the surf zone. They are often paired with Tropheus species as they share much of the same nutritional requirements. The 'funny swimming' is also a result of living if the surf zone as they have a small swim bladder and 'hop' around their environment - much like true marine gobies and thus the name.
