My Convicts Aren't Breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They look quite small yet, mine that are that size are not pairing off yet either, the 2-2.5in ones are starting to clear out the terracotta pots houses I made. They may be a wee bit small. Also mine didnt start pairing off until I got the water up close to 80-81 degrees.

mine had there first spawn at about 2.5" , but unfortunately my adult male bistlenose who was floating in a container in the top of the tank (waiting to be collected) jumped ship and ate all the eggs.
that was just over 2 weeks ago and i have just noticed that the females tube had dropped so hopefully more on the way soon :)

The smallest pair I had spawn in my care was a female 3/4 inch with a male barely reaching 1 inch........Your fish will spawn within a month.....Feed them live feed such as tubifix worms and brine shrimp.......

+1. My pair were under an inch when they spawned. The first day I added the female, and the male was busy chasing her. The day after to today they are inseparable. To the OP I say give them time, turn the temp to 80 or so, change a good percentage of water everyday, feed them blood worms or tubifex worms, and give them their privacy.

I was thinking that they both looked female in that pic too, if you do have a M/F pair then raise the temp like has been said, and when you do water changes than use water around 5* cooler than the tank to simulate rainfall.

1. It looks like there are three in there, one hidden behind the cup?
2. A couple of my males have a slight pinkish tint to them, similar the one in the middle of the tank, almost like there was a pink convict in their bloodline at some point.
3. Another thought is do you leave that light on all the time? Mine are most active in lower light conditions, like now, just the light from my 60 and two monitors shining on them and they are moving sand like they are natural born construction workers...
