My Cousin's Dovii Pair...HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah she would, totally different fish but just to give an example my jewel cichlid pair have yet to have a successful spawn, they lay a ton of eggs and over the course of the next 3 days eat them while still guarding them the entire time, then a few days later it all starts over again......

Okay, I went to his house to visit it while my cousin is not home. I found out that there is now tons of little wrigglers in the tank! Seems like they all are facing into the gravels try to dig on or something at 1 corner while the mother is aggressively guarding. Anyways, okay now how exactly do you keep these wrigglers alive and what to feed them?

crush up some pellet food or you can buy some fry food called "fish bites". once they are free swimming seperate the parents in another tank to maximize the number of survivors. you could leave them with the parents but then youre gambling. wrap all your filters with sponge to prevent them from getting sucked up and turn off any powerheads especially. very important: do regular water changes so they have clean water and also give him an airstone so they have airation.

while they are this little you dont have to worry about it, if they are in the tank with just the parents by themselves then i would leave them in as long as possible as they just seem to grow faster when they are in a big tank with their parents, and like said above just crumble up pellets or flakes, when they are still really small they should feed off any algae in the tank so refrain from glass scraping and the parents should also feed them by chewing up the food and filtering it back out through their gills by the babies (havent ever bred dovii so not sure if they do this as well but other large CA cichlids do so i would imagine they would as well GOOD LUCK!! and as soon as you see the parents eating any of them remove them to a smaller grow out tank

yapp, cover everyting.. so it does not suck up the frys.. the other post when u said he saw half were gone, i dink she ate them because they weren't fertilized... parent fish know when the egg are good or bad.. they usually eat the bad and leave the good ones..
you could either catch them out and put it in the breeder or separate the parents.

if you want, you can get the food called "first bite" made by hikari
those work very good. i feed all my cichlids fries that

GL with the fries!!

Do Hikari First Bite sink or floats?

they sink.. it powder like... it follows the water movement, but it does float around ur tank.. so the fish will go after it.. but you do not want to feed it just yet because they still have the egg sack.. so wait til the egg sack goes away and wait 1 week then start the feed of the "first bite" or u can do the micro pellet. the pic may look big, but it very tiny.. but i would start off with the first bite then move up to the micro pellet =) that what i did with my fries and they like it :headbang2

Do the mother eat the frys too after they hatched? My cousin called and told me that everytime he shine a flash light at it, the mother slowly go to the frys and slowly pick them up like she is eating it. And the scary part is the mouth move like its chewing on it. But the fry number looks the same, or not...he isn't sure. Can it be?
