Hope this shows up picture wise.....The challange was to build an environment for both the Mata and the larger fish. I used a few hundred pounds of native stone to build a "staircase" for the turtle as well as a place to sit and chill. The rocks also provide a myriad of caves for my more reclusive fish. Mata Mata do not bask or leave the water so they are one of the few that work for this.....They also cannot nip at fish or bite them in half like many as they eat by suction and will not pursue larger fish at all. One challange was the air above the tank. Mata Mata are sensitive to cold breathing air and in the winter my house in in the high 60s. My solution is to mount the glass tops in the Canopy 4" above the water. This leaves plenty of room for the turtle to stick his growing neck out of the water. The 80 degree water heats the space between the top and the water.

120 gallon 48" tank. Over built stand on 4x4 treated to look like textured stone. I run a wonderfully seasoned FX5 and and a new Sunsun 705 filter with 9V UV. Finnex 500 watt Titanium heater, Green Element 128 LED Grow capable light system.

Stock: one 6" Mata Mata turtle, two Lenticulata Pikes 6-8", two Kelberi Bass 6", three spotted and two barred SD, one 4" Marble Angel, one 5" Golden Angel, one 9" Sydontis Eupterus, one 5" Vampire Pleco

Cool tank, got any pics of the mata mata? love those things.
Guessing this isn't permanent due to size of tank and stock, any plans for cool custom build in future?
I will pair down stock as needed and add a larger tank in the future.....I have a few years at least. Mata get pretty big but do not need huge enclosures. This tank will last him/her many years. IMG_1137.JPG head shot.jpg IMG_1081.JPG full.jpg

Was talking more about the pikes and bass, won't have a few years with them in there. Your probably aware of this already, not trying to be tank size police, was more hoping you would say "yup here are my plans for custom gigantic paludarium" because I love giant paludariums lol.
I am very jealous of your mata, looks like a cute fella. One day I will keep one

With the caves the pikes could live in the 120 a long time.....i was led to believe the Kels topped off at 12" and found out too late they get fairly substantial.....nothing a 180 cant handle though.

180 for the cichlids would be a good option, yeah the 12" kel thing is a myth, just commented on another member's post who's kel is now 13" in a year, definitely still growing. Yeah the 120 will last the lents a good amount of time, though the 120 with turtle, two kels, and pike will be a lot of bioload.
Better get on wife's good side, start doing some dishes or something. hah
