I had seen this eel on Craiglist along with a 135 gallon tank, for sale for $450. I was thinking to myself, it'd be cool if I could grab the Fire Eel. but I didn't bother to send an email. 1 month later while in Merced California doing a wedding photog I was bored so I browsed the CL in Portland, and I saw an ad "Fire Eel up for adoption" I was like, no way I get it, so I send an email "I'll take it if you can hold it for me, until This Thursday, I'm in California and will be back ASAP" I don't get a reply, I get home, waited and Wednesday night a gal calls me on my phone, "Are you still planing to come by to pick up the Eel you wanted?" I was surprised, and I told her yes.
Thursday morning after dropping my daughter off to school I drove 50 miles to pick up the eel. to my surprise my Daughter loved the eel. My wife was scared of it, but is now grown attach to the eel.
I first had the eel in my 250 which was not a good idea, the Jardini chased him into the Sump, luckily I was able to get him out. then I moved him into a 75 gallon, which was under filtered and too small. then I decided to get rid of my African Cichlids to huse the eel in the 120 which had better filteration system. He's soo happy there! he/she's not breathing heavily like it did in the 75 gallon. She's always out hunting for food. veru affectionate, she lets me touch her and feed off my hand.
I will be adding 2 small ones, of 12 inch after the new year. My Daughter is naming them Claire and Audrey, after themselves.
The Eel was said to be 22" long when I first purchased it, I was told it was 4 years old.
I've had it for close to 4.5 months now, and had grown about a another 4 inches or so. He's about 1 inch thicker than the day I got her. it went on a growth spurt, before me, I think it was under fed and crapped into an 18 dept tank. I been feeding her very well, and she had fatten up really nice.
The PVC is 3 inch in diameter, and I was told it was 20" inches long, and she sticks out another 4-5 inches, easily.
BTW, she's a Pig, I will either find her a new home or move her into a tank by her self until I can fatten my other fishs, especially the Clown Loaches, She's eating everything I put int he tank.
I am not sure if its a she or a he, I'm guessing its a she because of her size.
