My daughter's Fire Eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice eel!

I should warn you though, I hear that spiny eels usually don't get along with each other. I have seen and heard of exceptions, but mostly I hear that it's a risk.

thanks, I have several tanks, so if and when the get aggressive, I'll separate them. For the time being, I saw a Red variant yesterday, and I must have! even if I just get one to grow out, I'll know it's life span and health, the one I have it great, but not knowing how old and health, does hinder my keeping of the eel. that is the only draw back. thanks again.

Nice eel I dig him

A lot of people say that, but it seems that there are a lot more people who have kept them together successfully than there are who have had it not work out. From what I've seen, I'd say it's more like they usually do fine together, but there are a few exceptions. Btw, it isn't just spiny eels in general that have that reputation, it's only the tire track eels and fire eels.

Sounds like you did your research. one of the owners who keep multiple fires together.. Treat them as you would cichlids. when you introduce the new ones. do it together. and mix the decor up and add more hide spots and you shouldn't have much of an issue. Get the new ones as big as possible. and be wary particularly if they are straight from importation. get them eating asap, and do not try and starve them onto foods. Let them settle in before trying to get them onto the foods you want. I suggest access to live worms, and/or ghost shrimp. try frozen krill ect first but don't be surprized if they refuse anything but nightcrawlers/earthworms. They are also very intelligent. My First eel started takeing frozen krill, and the other 2 watched her and where soon trying it themselves.

I also hand feed my 3 to make sure they all get there fair share. if I didn't my biggest one would bully the others away from the food until she couldn't cram anymore down her throat.

Very nice eel you have there!

MonsterMinis, good sign to know you are keeping 3 together. As I write the eel is headed to a new home, to a 240G temporarily and then to a 450G in a month or 2. I was very worried about my small loaches being snacks to the eel. I will replace the eel with 2 small, 6-7 inch, I'm hoping to raise these to the size of the one I trade to a buddy, not the wisest trade IMO, but the eel will have a good home.

Traded for 3 large clown loaches (4-5 inches) and $40.

Just to warn you. I originally tried 2 myself and 1 killed the other. the same one I now keep with 2 others. haveing the 2 subordinate ones in the tank kept the aggression divied up enough to allow neither to be harassed over-much. and still does. btw sounds like a fair trade imo. we have one at work approx 12"+ thats selling for 30$ ( which is cheap around here but usually they go for around 60$ that size)

I bought one, may consider the second later down the road. I will have 2 large tanks running, and will separate if and when the start fighting.
