yeah izzy my del did the exact same thing, i bought him about a month ago and he's grown approx an inch (about 3.5 now, can't wait for him to overtake my sens haha) but when i got him i didn't notice the external gills much, and now they're out about the size of your guy's
It really depends on the DO content. When I bought mine at just 4inch, there is hardly any left. Just 1 week later, the external gills grows back. And now I think its sheding them off, for good this time i hope.
Crunch is completely weaned to pellets now and never fails to let me know when to give him more. He repeats the same performance as in the pics. If I even glance at the tank he's right to the front of the tank looking at me like "You ARE going to FEED me aren't you?".
Its so odd, when I got my senegal I noticed right away how very doglike poly's can be. Crunch is like that X 100, not sure if this is because I raised him the way I did or if del's just have more personality than senegals. He's grown up having very close interaction with me, I spend a lot of time at the desk his tank is on. The senegal was older when I got him, grew up in a 40 gallon near the desk and did not have as much close up interaction with me.
Uhhhh guys, the "crushed" dorsal fins are actually gills that are supposed to be outside of the Delhezi. It will definatly disappear soon!!! take care.

I've done more than a little homework on polys. I know they have external gills on either side of their head but I've never seen any reference to external gills located in the dorsal fin. Could you elaborate?
