Well my fins on one of my goonches is getting a red tint.......rutilus is now popping into my head again as per someone said on my original posting. One of my major doubts was there was no reddening, but the red is showing up in the fins. Fellow goonch keepers and thoughts?

I dont remember if I was the first, bit I know I mentioned rutilus and I still stand by it. Hoek Hee Ng, aka Silurus on PCF, the gentleman who described rutilus in 2000, described a fish that IMO is fitted by yours.

When young they have pale yellowish fins that get the rich orange color as they grow. I dont recall the size he said they start to display thise colors but Im sure it was close to the size of your fish. Another diagnostic trait to distinguish it from yarelli was the relative lackbof spots and very distinct dark bands. Yarelli tends to have indistinct bands and lots of spots. Another key diagnostic trait is the fact that rutilus lacks a series of ridges going down the back between the dorsal fins which yarelli displays. There are also a series of internal morphological differences that are not apparent to a hobbyist with a live fish.

I have said for years that I feel the Thai goonches are yarelli and I consider your fish further proof of this. :)

Also, easiest to tell, rutilus has ovall eyes and yarelli has circular eyes.

All this crap I referenced is from Ng & Kottelat, 2000.

I honestly feel I agree with you! the color is the convincing factor for me! seeing the red color on the fins has made me feel confident of it now so it looks like I have one Yarelli and one Rutilus! I am happy honestly I have not seen a Rutilus in some time since my friend got his from Cali 3 years ago! I honestly feel lucky :)
