Shame the gator and goonch probably wouldn't work out. That's always been a dream combo for me!

I look forward to seeing the FLG in there. Gars and goonches are made for each other IMO! :D

I would add some bambusa. Asain coldwater ecosystem for MONSTERS!

I was just jokin hah...nice to hear the gators bein sold, shame u dont have a place for him somewhere else there amazing specimen, just dont play well with others. Just make it a platinum florida and ur good to go :) longnose gar are also pretty community friendly ime. A friend of mine has a floridaxlongnose hybrid, if u can find one of those there an amazing well mannered species aswell and alot darker colored like a gator.

Now THAT is a good idea! :D

You'd be able to save a ton on not having to heat the tank, too! lol

Sure you are! lol but your also right... and I agree a group of longnose would be pretty sharp looking w/ a goonch... also tolerate lower temps really well. If you intend to stay tropical temps the 2 other wide snout gar species might work... I have had little to no issues with either my Cuban or my 2 trops ( the trops are newer and have killed tank-mates in the past 2 homes they where in but I keep them w/ some smaller rays ect and they have plenty of room. imo this makes all the difference. my Cuban was raised with my floridas and rays.) my longnose on the other hand haven't bothered a tank-mate ever. I would choose them over floridas as florida don't get much past 2' and I'de be worried the goonch would eat them in the next few years... the longnose will likely hit 2' their 2nd year if not their 1st.

I keep a hybrid and a TSN in the pool with these guys and the only time they've had issues was during feeding time. which imo is really easy to avoid... feed floating/top food for the gar first so they're sated and then feed the cat.. or both at the same time in different places of the tank/pond/ect. Gar will feed off the bottom.. and imo are doing so blindly as they "sweep" the bottom with the tip of their snouts and what appears to blindly grab food... so if you have the cat feeding and the gar come in to feed.. bites can and do happen. but I've yet to have anyone sustain a seriouse injury from these encounters. however a big enough cat in its zeal could certainly make short work of a gar caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

w/ the goonch as the priority realistically floridas, longnose, shortnose are more likely to become goonch food then vise versa... when dealing w/ the 3 big guns Gators, Cubans, Trops... in that order seem to have the worst reps for being tank-killers. ( my Cuban seems ot be an exception even thought he dominates the tank he isn't overly aggressive) and ime keep either a single gar or a group of 3-5 min. They enjoy eachothers company and develop a heriarchy and social structure at least imo is interesting to watch. when I just had my 2 floridas the one def dominated the other in a bad way... once I added more gar ( not floridas but my 3 longs and Cuban) the dynamic shifted abit and they all co-habitated well... If you can start w/ YOY gar.. grow 'em out and they will easily slide into their heriachry w/ minor aggression issues.

abit of food for thought.

Really good info Amy. I'm considering adding a yoy LNG to my setup sometime in the future and this is kind of encouraging. I have lots of homework left to do for sure, but I enjoyed this info! :D
