my discus and a few questions...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
@fattubwhale: I received a call from a pet shop several hours away from me that I contacted about Discus. They called me and said that they have a local breeder that was coming in with several different types of Discus he mentioned that there may even be some wild Discus as well as mated pairs. I am questioning this as I have learned that Wilds are hard to find. I am thinking about going down to Milwaukee to look at them. My question is What am I looking for in a NON STUNTED discus. I now know some of the signs but as they are still small I am not sure if I will be able to see the red flags. Do you have any advice? yes I know that I may have just opened a kettle of worms by asking this but I want to learn

You may be opening a can of worms in many directions... But, with that said you have some good questions and concerns. Is the breeder bringing in juvies, sub adults or adults? If there are mated pairs assuming they are adults. If looking at juvies ask the breeder when they were born And the age they are now... look at the sizes 3-4 mo they should be around 2.5-3.5 inches, sub adults around 4-5.5 and adults around 5-7+ inches. Look at size, color, body conformation, roundness and thickness it will all vary by size. Stay away from fish that looks like what you posted football/oval shape large eyes lots of peppering etc. Keep in mind all strains look a little different in color when they are juvies-adults for example you can see the color and change in my giant blue I have http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?461109-My-Discus-Crew I purchased them back in Dec and they were 2.5-3" and now they are 4.5-5+ inches with 3 almost 6".
Wilds are available in the market also!
Btw, if it was me and I had to drive a 4-5 hrs to look at discus from a LFS I world rather just order what I want on line from a reputable vender JMO...
Hope it all works out!
