hey guy's
well bit the bullet!! went to look at the discus breeders stock, he had fish ranging in size, from babies to adults to pairs, hi setup was really clean and well cared for, i took the advice and went for the larger fish,
i went for a group of 5 he said they were about 9 months old, size wise, the smallest is about 3.5" fin to fin vertically, checked all the eye sizes etc , the largest is about 4.5" id say.
god knows what i bought lol, very amatuerish thing to do haha, but i have a couple with spots and the rest jaguar markings, some really nice fish though.
i also got some of his food, dry tetra discus food, he does vary though, i aclimatised, them etc but checked his water to mine and our waters were practically the same, i also added black water tonic.
i also got the clean up crew:
Salt and Pepper corydoras x4

and the dither fish:
Black Neon Tetra x25
before pics, just a few ????
i gave the fish time to settle in, before the lights were dimly put on, approx 5hrs... none of the fish have coloured down, i have one pearl white that is hiding, near the durso, but does pop its head out, think its just shy lol- hopefully. i fed them sparingly but they didn't take any food that i saw, but thats expected, the corys liked it though, will discus feed off the substrate???, one has. also can i use normal tropical flake for the other fish???
pics are really crappy, need to learn how to do them, and clean the back of my tank too lol

Hi.. Love the tank especially now that some of our flat friends are in there. Yes the discus love to eat off the substrate.. If you can get any NLS sinking discus pellets are really good for them. As you seem to realize they may not eat right away.. Don't worry just let them settle in. After giving them days to settle in if it's still a problem frozen blood worms always get eaten.. Yes you can use your flake food for the others.. The discus may or maynot take to it. I could never get mine to eat flake but others have.
Sounds like you are on your way to a wonderful discus experience.. Have fun with it and keep up with the pics. Congrats :thumbsup: HTH Sue:D

Very nice looking tank! I especially love the choice of plants. ;)

That idea for the background is awesome.

thanks,

sue they have started to eat, i used nls for my tropheus, really good foods.. they have now started to tuck in, and are picking at the substrate, there suck a graceful fish, im used to the buzy mess of malawi's haha

i'd love to make an auto change system for it, but the problem i have is that my water source is no where near the tank

heres a quick ms pic

the red box is the kitchen, the ble box the living room, the black box the tank, the yellow the sink and green water source, the tank is closed off by a door, so i can get to the back, but it would mean running pipe work along the skirtings in the kitchen for piping i think

any idea or tips that you guys use??

I have a few ideas for the auto change, but maybe you could have a water but sitting next to the tank (or behind?) and have the pump turn on when the water gets to low (known via a sensor) then it will top it up until the water is full again. Thats just an idea for an RO top up system. Maybe you could try something similar with the water change? Have 2 buts both with hoses. When you need to change water, the 2nd buts pump will turn on sucking water out of the tank, then when it gets low enough so that it has sucked out the required percentage, the 1st buts pump will turn on and re-fill it. Then when you want to, all you have to do is take both hoses to the sink and allow the 1st to refil, and the 2nd to empty. Maye you want an auto declorination system as well?

Hope I didn't lose you in my ramblings LOL. Nice discus :grinno:
