My DIY canister filter...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very cool idea...i too have a little giant doing nothing...if you dont mind i think i will copy you and try it out. have u thought about a prefilter tube with sponge???.....this could go long ways with some more tinkering!!! tanks

Great idea. Please update after use. I would be very interested in building one if it works long term.

Seen this on a different forum while googling DIY canister filters. Like your design better because it is just simple. I want to do the same but put it into the hood of my 75, and this design looks as though it would work great. Gonna give it a try this weekend for my 75.

or put the canister part before the pump :D that way you have the filter cleaning up the water before it even gets to hit the pump :D and a prefilter to keep it cleaner?

I think its best to push the water in not pull it in. as far as i know these little giants..i have the 4-md(690 gph at 1ft head)..work best when it pushes water thru.....is this correct???

The filter will have lots of mechanical media in it (and a filter sock if I can figure out how to get it in there). No need for a prefilter.

Thanks. I like simple. Its easy to do and generally lasts a lot longer.

Little Giant pumps do not do well if you restrict the flow INTO the pump. It can actually damage them. It's much better to have them pushing into the filter, and have them restricted by water not flowing through the filter as fast.

Yes, you're correct. Little Giant pumps work better when they're pushing through media, rather than trying to pull through media.

Hopefully I'll be able to get the canister spray painted black today (just a half day at work). Tomorrow I'll probably rig up a wooden rack to hold it upright so that the water flows evenly through the canister. Then once the mech media arrives, I can fill it up and get it running. I'll post pics as it progresses.

Connor your a god among men when it comes to the engineering of DIY CANISTER filters.
