Hey folks. Wanted to share my minnow tank I have started after getting some good ideas from this board! :naughty: The goal is to keep keep anywhere from 1 to 3 dozen minnows in my garage as 'standby' fishing minnows so I don't have to deal with my local bait shop's horrible business hours! I'll try to keep a few dozen on hand, take them fishing when I want, bring home any unused minnows, and replenish during the week as needed so I'm always ready to go. At least that is the goal! :D And by the way, this is my very first kind of aquarium so I know I have a lot to learn. That is why I am here.

The tank is a standard Rubbermaid 18 gallon storage box. I plan to keep it about half full so maybe 9 gallons. After trying 4 different pumps (on 4 different trips to the pet store) I finally settled on a Maxi-Jet 900 (230 gph). I have a 500 gph bilge pump for a boat but thought it caused too much turbulence in the water and would stress the minnows. I'm also using a bubbler for aeration. I'm currently using a timer to cycle the pump and aerator on/off every 15 minutes.

The filter is a household water filter I bought at Lowes. Fittings were also from Lowes in the outdoor irrigation section. I installed a length of PVC down the center of the filter housing to force the water to first flow through the filter media, then it is drawn into the holes I drilled in the lower section of the PVC pipe. Water exits as it flows back up the pipe and out the outflow fittings. The pipe is cut to the exact length to fit into indentions that held the original water filter cartridge in place.

I have 2 scrubbies I am going to add inside the filter today to augment the floss. I should be able to open up the center of the scrubbie enough to slide them down over the PVC pipe. I think they will fill the space perfectly.

My goal with the filter is to handle both mechanical filtration and hope it develops as a biofilter to eliminate ammonia. Am I on the right track?

The floss has been in place one week and I am currently doing 25 - 50% water exchanges with dechlorinated water once a week (I add blue baitsaver crystals that are supposed to eliminate chlorine). I can smell it a bit when I go in the garage so am hoping the biofilter part develops soon.

If water flows from top to bottom would you have it pass through the scrubbies first or the floss?

I got the scrubbies in the filter now (I put them on top of the floss). I also added more water. I am not sure if 10 to 12 gallons will be enough for 2 or 4 dozen minnows (they are all small minnows). I might upgrade to a larger tub and try to keep maybe 15 gallons in it?

i see what your doing, but why not just by a cheap used tank(garage sale, craigslist, etc) and do it like that? you can buy a cheap h.o.b. filter at walmart for $20 to go on it.

I already had the Rubbermaid storage bin (girlfriend is a pack rat :D) so didn't need to buy a tank. I also had the filter. Only thing I bought was the pump, and I'm thinking of taking that back as I found a marine pump I forgot I had!

My tank is starting to get kinda musky smelling though. I've had my filter media in place for 2 weeks now but do not think I have enough bacteria colonized yet. Can I add a cup or so of carbon chips in a filter bag and see if that helps?

Turns out I'm not getting very much flow from my pump now that I put that filter in place. I measured the output and I'm getting about 48 gph from my 230 gph pump. Perhaps I have my filter materials packed too tightly into my housing? I tried not to pack it tight but it was tighter than I wanted to get it to close. I think I'm going to have to rebuild using 3" PVC to get less compression (and hence more water flow) with my scrubbies.

yeah, typically some carbon will help with the smell. i kept some minnows for a while, and thought they stunk more than my other tanks. maybe it was just becouse i didnt pay as much attention to them though.

I upsized my tank, filter and pump - now I am using a 31 gallon Rubbermaid tank and keeping about 20 gallons in it. I got rid of the filter shown and built an inline filter out of 3" PVC pipe. I have about 12" of filter media in it (floss + scrubbies). I picked up a 375 gph pond pump and that is giving me a turnover rate of about 8 (my filter slows down the pump output rrate - I measured it ).

Unfortunately I had a big die off the past 2 days and lost about 50% of my minnows. I am not sure why. I reused some of my filter material that was developing bacteria but started off with 20 gallons of fresh (but dechlorinated) water. Water is smelling funky so i did a 25% changeout and put a cup or so of carbon chips in a filter bag and hung it over the side.

Any ideas what caused the die off? it was pretty depressing to see the opposite of what I was trying to achieve happen. it is still going on.
