Awesome setups! I too have thought about doing something like this for small small community.

Maybe you can try something like this next:

Just drop the water level down and attach them to the back of the tank. They also have floating platforms you can use.

What's too expensive? This is all DIY, maybe a couple $ in plastic materials and whatever plants you want to use!

Just buy plants that don't require a lot of light. Most house plants should do fine.

I have been wanting to fill the top of my tank with floating flowering pond plants, but Gimli the Oscar would shred them. He gets testy if I try to suspend plants of any kind.
