my dorado killed my orino pbass

I'd offer up my advice but it would just go against all the advice already given here...... I guess I tend to have a little different luck with my Characins then most people do.

Dorado are much more passive IF they know they will never run the tank. Mine tried to kill eachother with just the trio in a 180. I added them all to the big tank and as soon as the much larger fish swam by they knocked off the trying to kill eachother and became followers of the bigger fish in their shoal.

I have had 2 Dorado living together in my big tank with a pair of Brycon, a lemon fin Barb, a silver Aro, a Fire eel, rays, Irwinni, and a few sun cats for over half a year now, maybe even going on a year? not sure, all I know is in the presence of larger fish they are MUCH more docile.

+1, i completely agree that most predatory fish will not obtain that aggression stage provided there is someone bigger whom already possesses the major territory of the tank. I had a red tail payara that would attack anything in his 90g tank, but upon moving him into a 180 with larger stock he quickly cut that out. Also same thing with a mala wolf i had awhile back. Though environment is the biggest factor in everything that is fish keeping.

Hey Mike, good to see you're back in the hobby. you had quite a collection back then. sorry to hear about the orino though

yea dammitKhoa good to hear from you. give me your cell # in a PM and ill show you what i have goin on at the moment. mostly have cichla and id like to see your fish too.

thanks for the info guys. if i had a larger tank to put him in with maybe some massive cichla or something i would, but right now hes gunna be solo in the 125.

yea i just recently went through problems with my dorado as well he managed to kill two snook and a redtail payara now hes alone in my 125 with my other redtail payara which seems to hold his ground alot more and fight back enough to deter excessive agression. I am lost as well golden dorado are such amazing fish but are the most agressive thing i have ever seen even towards each other.

just curious i have a 180 gallon with 4 10-12 inch megalops atlanticus do you think if i were to move one of the tarpon on with a 7 inch dorado it would calm him down?

I can't say for sure but my dorado is about 12" and I tried adding 2 Atlantic tarpon of the same size and he wasn't having it. After a week I had to separate them. Also this dorado harasses my jardini that's close to 18". I got lucky and got a nice jardini, but still a jar. The only fish I keep the dorado with is a pacu of the same size, simply because pacu don't pay attention to anything but food. Once my tarpon and TATF grow larger than the dorado I hope to try again

so i had to put my 7" dorado in my 150 gal 10"kelberi and a 8" orino tank while i was setting up a new 180. the dorado beat the orino up pretty good and left some bite marks and took a bit of slime coat off the fish(nothing real serious). After waiting 3 days of acclimating the water in the 180 with healthy media and all good water conditions i added the orino and kelberi and everything went fine and i even bought a 9"azul to go in the 180 the following day.

so about 2 days after adding them to my 180 i noticed the orino acting funny and bumping into the glass and sitting on the bottom. I checked water conditions and everythign was normal. i went to check the tank 5 hrs later and the Orine was dead died.

i now have the dorado in his own 125....any suggestions as to a tankmate that he wont kill.

thanks mike
i keep a 7'' dorado with the guy you sold me
