Is it just me, or does the dovii look like he might be a hybrid (putting aside the fact that he was sold as "wild") I think the face markings are throwing me off. Or are those just breeding marks?

no the markings vary on dovii, my male and female look like that at times, really depends on the mood there in, and how they are feeling, the female get that reddish tinge to there face your seeing at times,

Day 3, about half or more of the eggs are white, not fiertilized. My female dosent seem to be guarding her eggs as well as my Jags did last month, but the Jags were about an inch bigger. She dosent seem to even want the dad near here and keeps biting him. I wonder if that has to do with so many being non fertile. Im going to put in some egg crating later today and pen her up either by herself or with the male and keep everyone else on the other side of the tank for now. In about a week when the fry are swimming on their own I will remove everyone from the tank accept for mom and dad.

Great looking young Dovii you got there.

I am going to the store to see if I can buy a light grate from Menards to make a divider for the time being. I did a 90 percent water change the night before they spawned. Did this have something to do with the final outcome?

You may want to think about grabbing some larger tanks while you're there.:D

Water changes are everything in this game.

Females will always become extremely protective of there eggs and yes, even towards the male they have spawned with. I will suggest you don't opt for a divider at this young stage. It doesn't sound like there's a need yet and by doing so the only thing you'll acheive will be to weaken their bond.

My fish have alot of growing to do before they need a bigger tank. I get a kick out of all the poster that say "Oh , you better get a bigger tank" for a certain type of fish. I have another 90g, 120g and a 250gal im my house so when the time comes when the fish get bigger they will be moved. For now my 4.5" fish have more than enough room in their 75gal tank. By the way Mendards is a building center. I appreciate the tip on the bonding process but I put a divider in the tank yesterday and mom and day are getting along fine taking turns at guarding the little few and inbetween of what was fertilized. It looks like only about a hadful are going to hatch. I'll post pics if and when it dose happen. I would think it would be today sometime. The reason I put a divider into the tank is because currently there are 4 Dovii and 2 RT Motas in this tank and being shes not on that nest 24/7 the babies would have been eaten as soon as they hatched. Im better safe than sorry.

Note the smiley face.:naughty:

Good to see you kept the pair together, that was my only concern for you. Good luck matey.

Hybrid? Santoury, you've been looking at plants for too long?

Piranhanut- that male looks chunky what are you feeding him, steak?

Well that's very good. Congrats. Be sure to do water changes like 25% every two days. Feed the babies BBS ( baby brine shrimp )

Piranhanut~
That male is awesome! I didn't think that males developed blue in them that early (I thought >10" was typical length when they started showing the blue in fins), I guess he would be a real stunner when he grows some more:)
