The tube is about 6 feet long and it feeds into another sump. You really dont need to worry about how long the tubing is, its the height that matters most. If you dont have to push the water up, then you will be ok.
When I said the bit about the water draining I was replying to santoury but failed to mention that. If you drill a sump and let the excess water flow down the drain you have to take the total capacity into consideration. Otherwise, you may run the pump dry if the power fails (because it will drain a lot of the total system volume). You dont need to worry about that with a floatswtich and pump setup.
I think the idea you have is the best. If you plan on using a drip emitter, be sure to cut the pressure down to about 25psi.
