My dumb idea (planted+marine+mullet)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sounds like a great idea, as mentioned above, id increase the volume if possible, or keep thinkin on the stock choices. Afterall you have plenty of time. in this time, read up on the care of ocean plants, as some can be very very hard to keep and grow. Good luck

i think its a great idea. a lagoon ecosystem tank would look great. as said above mullet in general are grazers feeding off algae and micro-organisms in the top layers of sediment on the ocean floor. but are also opertunistic in their feeding habbits. ive seen mullet caught on bread, what are described as bristleworms in aquariums (ragworm in the uk). shore crabs, various mollusc's. ive even seen a group of over a dozen mullet feeding on the carcas of salmon, some one had filleted at the jetty, and had discarded. so the mullet we have in the uk (Chelon labrosus) will eat pretty much anything. as far as im aware, they will have the same feeding habits as the species you intend to keep.

i think you'll need a big tank, not stupid big, but wide enough so they have pleanty of swimming room. i also think a pretty substantial refugium is a must, to try to provide some of the micro-organisms on which their diet is based in the wild.

good luck. keep us posted

you might want chack out opali as tank mates there cool and live with mullet in the wild here in san diego they love eating peas

Wow I guess this isn't a dumb idea after all. :)

thanks for the info. I will probably do the pond idea, only with a glass side or two. I'll go for at least 500 gallons if I am using a pond.

COULDN'T FIND Opali.

If you do such a big pond you probably need evaporation solutions...

good call. that will need to be thought about.

another option is to do a high end brackish setup (1.018+SG) they will be fine in this environment. mullet go to feed in esturine areas all the time.

in your proposed pond, as the water evaporates, the salinity will increase, simulating going into open water. fill it back up slowly, and the salinity will decrease, simulating going up river. in effect your pond will have a tide. just to a lesser degree.

for this to work properly you would need to figure out an auto top off system (like the cistern on a toilet), that doesnt just add small amounts of water when needed, but will let a large amount of water evaporate, and then add a large amount of water over a long period of time to fill back up to the original level.

you will also need to do some mesurements to work out where the high and low water levels need to be based on the salinity you want. as the changes in salinity cant be too big otherwise the BB will crash and cause you problems. no more than a 0.002 SG difference per week.

Or build a greenhouse style casing over it and plant a mangrove garden on the sides...
That was originally meant as a joke but it might actually be a good idea...

A huge pond with loads of macroalgae

And planted with mangroves

Mullets

Some fiddler crabs and mudskippers at the mangroves

And a series of refugiums for mantis shrimp!!
