My electric blue acara

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmmm... but what is it? Some type of GT/blue acara/hybrid? I know Segrest calls it "electric blue acara" on their list but a lot of their common names are incorrect for various species. I'd be interested to know which acara it was bred from. It's hard to tell with the original species' distinguishing markings gone.
Segrest catalog says--> Aequidens pulcher.

I simply assumed they were just a morph of pulcher similar to the electric blue ram, but I suppose I can't rule out a hybrid. They have more color on the head than a GT does, but it does seem to be similar to the blue coloration on a Geophagus brasiliensis.

I was able to buy one more from the store, but one was sold a couple of hours before I got there. I guess I'll need to start a growout thread or something!

I just pick up two at my favorite fish store in Ohio. They ended up costing me $30 a piece but the reason I even went up there is to pick up my Mbu Puffer. After talking with the owner who I've known for years he let me know this is the first time being imported into the hobby. I guess this is the second shipment to enter the trade. If you can get them I would highly suggest doing so because they are awesome little fish. They have a lot of personality and hopefully I ended up getting a male and female (fingers crossed) worst case scenario (if both turn out male) I'll just breed them with a normal acara and see if it works more like the way of breeding electric blue jack Dempsey.

Yup! They appeared on the stocklist for Segrest farms last week, meaning that they will be all over the country very soon. You'll probably see them in Petco/Petsmart since Segrest supplies a lot of them. I paid full retail for mine, which was $18. I got it from a store called "A Family Pet Center" in Sarasota, FL. They just asked Segrest to surprise them with some fish and that's what arrived! I think my pics were the first ones on the internet, but Segrest added a pic of their own yesterday.

Interesting. I haven't seen these on the ekkwill list yet. He's cool looking.
