Odd scales? I'm thinking your looking at the flower patterns. It kinda sucks it didn't develop very well.

I've caught a fish that looked very similar called a bowfin. It was a nasty little bastard about 4-5 pounds. I thought I had on a good size pike. What a fighter! Even out of the water the thing was a handfull. Beautiful tank by the way.
