My Experience Mixing Tigrinus (& why not to do it) (dismissing the golden tigrinus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Damn, I had a powercut on Sunday in the early hours and lost my Tigrinus :( & then got the news this morning the dude who bought mine... well... it jumped out... no luck *mine died to lack of oxygen*

Sorry to hear this and thank you for the honest reporting. Was the tank stocked heavy? I wonder why the tig suffocated. And over how many hours was the water not moving? With light stocking, the DO should have lasted at least a few hours.

Take heart and don't get knocked down. I am sure you will try again and also might be a good idea to get a battery power backup or at least set up some type of alert on your phone when the power goes out.

It was off from 6:30am-5pm, nearly 12 hours. However I woke up at 11:30, my loss count was 2 rays, datnoid, asian aro & tig. Luckily I saved everything else, but the tank the tig was in is a growout 5foot that housed 5 small rays, and a bunch of other growouts, on the heavier side of stocking I guess, so oxygen supply gone quickly.

i was so sad to loose my first NTT datnoid, asian arowana, stingray & obviously tigrinus, these were all my first of the species. I also lost a pup I had acquired but already owned a ray so 2nd one wasnt my first.

I have now got a 6.5kwh generator & cobalt ACDC airpumps, my neighbours lent me a 2.8kwh generator but it wasnt that much use apart from oxygen.

If you want to see the writeup on ATF, it can be found here:

As to your ATF, I can tell you what species it is if you're curious. Post in that section (Other Characins) about it and I'll sort you out. :)

hi, I have attached photos. From juggling growout tanks, even though this was ok in a 4foor growout with bass, I moved the ATF & the 4 1”bass to a 2foot growout temporally and overnight the bass attacked & killed it. 2 photos are of it dead, 1 is of it alive. Confuses me but I know they don’t tend to attack back similar to Tarpon, they just take the beating & die. Sad to loose this fish, but I believe it was messing with my baby growout florida gar too... suddenly 2 died when I had removed all tank mates except the ATF, could you maybe identify, I think its FATF.

bass bullied my last ATF to death too, but this time it was 5x bigger than the bass, last time it was about 2x larger... maybe its a learning curve not to mix it with bass until its older? Or at least give the bass & ATF more space?Thats what confused me, in a 4footer they were fine no missing scales, but in the 2footer tank, it was dead overnight living with the same fish + a couple 3” datnoids & a 1” BGK actually, but theyre timid and harmless at that size, i think maybe the shiney scales attract the bass, or possibly datnoids if it was them??? It confuses me,I’ve seen plenty setups, all be it the fish are larger, but they contain ATF, Bass & dats all ok.

Please repost your questions as a new thread in Other Characins in order to avoid derailing this thread further. I had originally only mentioned ATF as an example of the unapparent genetic diversity that could be present in Brachyplatystoma, this isn't an appropriate place for the discussion of their husbandry.
