i've actually seen an above ground pool in someones basement with saltwater black tip reef sharks.. didn't ask the cost, but very cool

That is a pool, and it has fish in it.. but I wouldn't recommend swimming in it! hehehe Those fish are just amazingly big and beautiful. How the filter manages that bio-load is amazing. What a pretty pond.

Also, pretty amazing that the Koi and Aros are co-habitating and thriving. I wonder the water temp.

When someone asks what a Monster fish is, that's what they should be shown. Wow.

No such thing as a basement here in So-cal... I don't know why, but the houses here just don't have them.

Also, indoor pool is cool but my gosh what an expense and I've seen basements turned to pools. Unfortunately the house had to be demo'd when you move out.. Mold, moisture, water and weight = zero home resale value. Sad but I've seen it. Not the route I'm looking for. :)

Reason is earthquakes...no one wants to dig people out...

Ahhh.. makes sense. Except if a building collapses it doesnt matter if its a multistory building. Debris is heavy..

Basements are built for reasons. Comparing a 2-story house with no basement and a 1-story house with a basement, all things considered, the 2-story is cheaper. It costs a lot of money to dig down before you can build.

The only reason anyone has a basement is because they need one. In the northeast and midwest, where the whether gets much colder, you need to have a foundation below the frost line. At that point, you only need to dig a little deeper to have a full basement. Or you can stop and have a partial or look-out basement.

California houses simply do not need basements. The fact that there are potential earthquakes could be considered a reason, but since there isn't a reason to build them in the first place, it seems like an afterthought.

It would be very cool. I am sure the conversion sites would recommend testing the pool to be sure it is non toxic. Then you could heat it for free with solar water panels to any temp you want. All you would need to do is pay for the pump.
