A little trick I learned...

I shoot in raw, always and then edit with adobe lightroom. While editing I bump up the black value. It seems to darken the background (obviously if you have black) but it also seems to darken the color and make it pop more. I've been shooting a lot when the sun is hitting the tank though, so bumping the black value seems to help deaden the glare a bit and it doesn't look as hazey. I haven't tried the technique with normal aquarium lighting or a flash though.

Also, what cameras are you guys using. You shouldn't have noise at ISO 400. Most new cameras can punch up ISO's to 1600+ and not have noise. I'm still rocking a 20D and dont think the noise is that bad even at 1600. I used to use 1600 all the time shooting bands in bars and stuff with crappy lighting.
