Woke up to day, fed my fish and noticed my Festivums mouth is damaged.

His mouth is fully extended/pouting and it seems like it cant go in, is there anything i can do or am i going to lose him? (will be gutted i have grown him up from 1"-6")

I cant tell whether he has eaten one of my small dithers, hit a rock/glass or has lip locked or been beaten up by my 8" Severum (the rest of the fish are smaller than the Festivum so unlikely them)

All other fish in my tank are fine, its just him, i thought he ate one of my 2 1" Platys but they are fine also, the only other fish he could of ate is one of my black ruby barbs or a cory, but they all seem to be there :S

Never had this problem but it reminds me of threads about ducklips.

do a recheck if there is less dithers in the aquarium in case it is the festivum could have swallowed him and he stretched his mouth to much and it curved like that as a result
i got severums with two festivum i just bought 2 weeks before, and the severums and all the other fish in the aquarium are ignoring the festivums i hope it ill stay this way

Thanks for your responses, the duck lips thing looks very different to me, my Festivum looks like he's dislocated his jaw to me, its liek hes extended/stretched his mouth normally like all Cichlids do and he's got it stuck :S

Its weird to say but other than White Spot i have never had any diseases in 15-20 years of keeping fish, looks like there is a first for everything.

My water stats are perfect, i check weekly and do 50% water changes.

Any other feedback will be much appreciated.

Even if he has damaged his jaw I'm happy to keep him like that because he's a valued pet, only problem i see is that he cant eat.

I'm not sure if he did it when eating because hes the most greedy fish in my tank, i fed them soem pellets and then i noticed afterwards when i sat down and had a look in the tank, not sure if it was like that before, I'll feed them a few pellets again later, see if he can eat or not.

Have you tried taking him out to see if you can get him to move his mouth again. Just try opening and closing it. See if maybe that will help... It definitely won't hurt.

Yes mate i netted him out earlier, stressed the poor bastard out :( hes slowly dying in the corner of my tank now :(

A couple of weeks ago my Geophagus brasiliensis had exactly the same symptoms. When I took him out of the tank I found that he had swallowed an Otocinclus and the pectoral fin spines were caught in his mouth. I pulled out the Oto with tweezers, and both are now doing fine. Double check to make sure there isn't something caught in your festivum's mouth or throat. I hope things work out for you.
