you need a bigger male. it needs to be bigger than the female by 1.5-3 inches. everyone has their different sizes, but from what i have noticed, if they are too close in size, they will fight alot more. if the male is quite a bit bigger, he can dominate her quickly and they will pair faster. one thing that i learned from camph is to cover the tank with a blanket. i turned off the lights too. when i went to work i did this because i didn't want them to kill each other while i was gone. it worked well. there were no injuries that i didn't see happen. i watched them closely during the courting (for the lack of a better term) process.

Agree. Also your male might not have been mature yet. While the blanket trick might work,I haven't needed to do that. Though there's always more than one way to skin a cat. And yes you need to watch them very closely when breeding.

Maybe the male could fertilize the eggs like that? But it's not very efficent IMO as you are limiting his access to them.

Just to let you know, fish eggs must be fertilized within minutes of it coming out of the females tubes in order for them to be fertile. After several minutes of the eggs being laid, the shell of the eggs will begin to harden regardless if a male fertilized it or not..once the shell is harden the sperm will not be able to penetrate into the egg....
