Agree. Also your male might not have been mature yet. While the blanket trick might work,I haven't needed to do that. Though there's always more than one way to skin a cat. And yes you need to watch them very closely when breeding.
Maybe the male could fertilize the eggs like that? But it's not very efficent IMO as you are limiting his access to them.
