My Filter smelled like cologne while servicing

Just a few days ago I was cleaning the filter for my Jack Dempsey grow out tank a 55g and I noticed that his filter smelled like some pine deep woods cologne!!!
I don’t anything at all natural in his tank nothing that would cause this!!!
So by my surprise what I thought would be stinky was actually so potent my eyes almost began to water and I thought watered down and bottled I could be rich!!! It reminded me of old spice the stuff Grandpa wore!!! Idk ?‍ but it caught me by surprise all his parameters are good ?
But is this normal??? Is it ok he is healthy and happy!!!

Never had a tank that smelled like your description ?
Seriously most well established filters may smell light earthy like garden soil smell. I also have a aquarium that smells like wood.

I don’t know about pine woods, but melafix has a pretty potent aroma after a few treatments of it.

Melafix smells like a cross between tea oil and artist paint. Had my whole basement lit up when I used it.

Wish my filter had a good smell…my jd’s tank has an almost metallic smell sometimes.

So...I've long been aware that I am as deaf as a post, which makes my life easier when it comes to sumps, overflows, airpumps, etc. since I don't even notice the noises they make, which apparently drive other folks to distraction.

But now, I'm starting to think that I might be "hard of smelling" as well. I have never noticed any kind of aroma from my tanks or filters, aside from a general earthy-garden kind of smell that I find quite pleasant. I use Massivore pellets regularly, and everyone including the store I buy them from complains about the stink; I've never particularly noticed or been bothered.

Freeze-dried krill have a fishy smell that is noticeable when the container is open and I am actually feeding the fish or turtle. Frozen brine shrimp have a slightly annoying aroma that I try to keep off my hands when using it...but the only really irritating food smell IMHO is frozen Hikari plankton, which smells so bad that I honestly thought the package had thawed, rotted and then been re-frozen. Nope; that's just the way it smells.

But this thread bemuses me. Deep woods pine? Old Spice cologne? Tea oil...artist's paint...metallic smells...what are you people talking about???

As often happens...I find myself at odds with the common opinions about this topic. And as usually happens...I think everyone else is delusional!
