My final word on the Emperor 400 HOB Power Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you care what I think about the Emperor 400, check this out. You should care. I've been keeping fish for 30+ years, and I love filtration as much as the fish themselves. I'm no scientist, but i'll give you a seat of the pants review. :)

Do the bacteria on the biowheel instantaniously break down ammonia? I never understood how they could do this with the water pushing by so fast....

Chemically, I don't know how the process works, but yeah, the bacteria on the bio-wheels eat more toxic stuff and convert it from what I know. The Bacteria is static on the wheel, so its being fed, i.e. consuming ammonia etc. So it doesn't matter how fast the wheel is spinning or how slow its spinning. Maybe there is an optimal speed, but all i know is that the filters seem to work.

The Emperor has been my go to filter on my fifty five gallon tank for a few years now.

@ empyreal not seeing how its different from any other. Water moves quickly over the biomedia in my sump as well. Still seems to work

I had my Emperor for 12 yrs and still running quiet. It's a great filters and flow is adjustable so perfect for plant setup if you don't want too much surface agitation.

I ve got 2 emperors running out in the garage. My only real complaint really is the noise. Compared to everything else I run, they are the noisiest.

Not my go to for displays, but a pretty good filter functionally.

I like the older ones with the clear plastic to view the bio-wheel and flow adjuster. They also seemed much quieter than the newer ones.
