I bought a "yellow" amphilo Saggitae from Rapps a month back.. well, turns out it's a white, and not a yellow..

Well, I have her in a tank, but needed to divide it for a male frontosa that I need to air expel..

About half hour after putting him in the tank, she released a TON of eggs on the side of the tank.. knowing they could never create fry, I start thinking about what I could breed with her.

I have barred Saggitae- so making 100% Saggitae is possible..

But I am thinking Carpintis!

I think it would be a pretty awesome mix?

What do you guys think?

MOre hybrids?!?!?!

Personally, I would go for the barred cross over.............Anything with a potential GIANT nuchal hump on some of the fry woudl be ok.........I have seen the ugliest color combonations on many flowerhorns, but appreciated the body shape and nuchal hump that formed the whole "package...."SO look for a well formed breeder for whatever the fish is you are planning to cross..........And letting people know ahead of time they are hybrids greatly dcreases the annoying phone calls down the road that their fry turned out wierd.............

In order for me to breed my barred, I need to find a nice female Carpintis that is close to his size.. which right now I don't have.. I do have about 30 Carpintis that I am growing out, so that is a possibility in the near future.

I have a paired set of carpintis that I will be using for pure carpintis fry.

I don't plan on breeding them over and over and over. I just want to get 1 successful batch of the carp x sagg just to raise a few of the fry and see if they turn out decent. If they are a hit awesome, if not.. no big deal.

I'm not in it for profit.. just want to see what I can turn out.

I personally like hybrids, and I think if you confine them to tanks only there is no harm in doing so.

It won't look good.. yet it doesn't actually exist yet because I haven't bred them.. ok then...

LOL. You holding a grudge is preventing you from fully understanding what I said. Buts its all good. W/e floats your boat.

Holding a grudge?

I fully understand.

In your opinion the cross won't look good, BUT you don't even know what they will actually turn out to be.

Sorry it's not a low grade FH. :( wah!

Why hybrids to begin with? Meh. As noted, whatever floats your boat. Was really hoping to see some pure stuff come out of all that nice stock you got from Rapps.

BTW, I assume your and your fiancee made up now and you didn't end up moving out like you said you were?

It's hard to have pure fish, when you don't have 2 of the same fish.

Yes, I am trying to acquire pairs, but it's going to be a while.

I just want to see what this mix will turn out to be. If it's a hit good.. if not oh well. No big deal.

And yes, I changed my hours at work, and things have been much better.. but I did stay with my brother for a little over a week.

Personally I think that for a first time breeding project this is going to be a colossal failure, with none of the offspring looking anywhere nearly as good as either of the parent species on their own.

I have nothing against hybrids (see my avatar) but when one is looking to hybridize fish the ultimate goal should be to create something that somehow improves on the parents. Better finnage, stronger color, a different shape or form, etc. I personally don't see that happening with the fish that have been mentioned. IMO you'd be better off getting some additional pure specimens & going that route, vs just creating hybrids with whatever you happen to have available at the moment.
