short clip and no stationary pics.. but looks like same ones I had.. try feeding less food more often, they're scavengers 'n after a few water changes and going from feeding 2x daily to 4x daily.. but same amount of food total daily I got rid of mine. Prazi-pro does not get rid of them. and they never where harmful. Just unsightly. Every now and then I spy one still. But rarely. and it's not worth removing my driftwood to compleatly erradicate them. Oddly enough it's also the same tank I have my Oscar in.

Correct they are generally harmless but are typically an indicator of a dirrrty tank. Many meds will put a dent in them very briefly but next to nothing will nuke them. Like monsterminis said. . .dialing in the feeding regime will usually reign them in.

With a little love and some elbow grease it'll look like that again. The algae is the biggest problem though. It sets in way to fast. The light source is (3) 40w tubes. I'm only using one tube and it still seems to grow algae at a rapid rate. I'll try blocking out some of the light this weekend and see if that helps.

Jesus that is some fast algae growth.

How long are you running the lights daily? How is the natural light in the room?
What's your w/c regiment? (Be honest. . .people lie so much about w/c) and what's your filtration/circ. equip situation?

14 hours per day

no natural light

W/C 20% once every 2 weeks

Emperor 400 with a maxijet 1200

x2 Top Light 150w submersable heaters.

120w of light but I only use 40w

Up your wc to 50% once a week, clean water is the key to healthy tanks, do not rescue any more big fish until you up you maintenance schedule.

14 hours a day of light O.O .. also cut that down to 8-10 hours. The algae growth is likely due to high amounts of nitrates in the water. and yeah I'de do a min 20% per week if not more. but I wouldn't do more 'n 50% since your O is a rescue he is use to dirty and dingy. See how he handles the water changes. and keep up on your water testing.

Oscars are very dirty fish.. and tbh.. I wouldn't even bother with the algae scrapping 'cept the front.. why?.. Algae though unsightly is a nitrate sponge. It does the same thing alot of chemicals and "crap" we put in our filters. I "harvest" the algae from my tanks as it gets thick enough to pull off in strips! yes I let it grow that much!.. But oddly enough.. It doesn't happen very often. If you look at many SW systems these days you will hear of what they call an "algae scrubber".. same concept... Otherwise if the tank is in a spot where it's more for show.. scrub away!..

I agree, I let it grow on the back wall in mine too. I have an acrylic with a blue back, and I like the algae better than the sky blue. I leave it, it sucks up nitrates, and the fish pick at it.

Yikes.

way too much light. try to stay <8. I only run mine when I'm home.

This a 90gal right??? Not nearly enough filtration. Throw a canister on there as well as your emperor (don't use the carts just put floss in the media baskets) if your planning on keeping lg. cichlids in that tank. Even if it's just the O. I reccomend an Ehiem 2260/62. Filtration won't effect alage growth much but it will effect the water quality and fish health.

And tbh 20% every two weeks is nothing for a w/c. Get a carbon bottle + a fill hose + a drain hose and tear it up! Most people slack on the w/cs due to the the time and effort involved in buckets. IMO maintaining any system over 30gal with buckets is ridiculous. You can do 100%+(yes i said + ask how!) on a 90g safely in about 30mins.

A carbon bottle will cost you a couple hundred bucks( for a 2ft home use model) but seriously. . . . it will give you the power of grayskull for years on the first batch of carbon and it only takes about 50 bucks worth of decent carbon to recharge a small one.

If your handy you can install the carbon as part of an intergrated system quite easily and set-up "auto-drain and fill" where "flushing" your tank only entails flipping valves and drinking beer. . . . well. . .careful not too much beer lol.

Update:

I cleaned up all the algae and bought 130lbs of flagstone to cover up the glass in the background. Looks a hell of a lot better IMO.

The little guy seems alot happier to. ;)

I also cut down on the lighting to 8 hours a day. I plan to add a canister filter to accompany the emperor 400 but due to financial difficulty, it'll have to wait.

How's it look? :naughty:
