I am new to Flowerhorns. This is my very first one. I just couldn't pass him up. He is just too unique looking. I have this one all by himself with a couple of plecos, which he has tried to pick on, but seems like he gave up. He is already eating frozen bloodworms, but spits out the pellets. The owner said he has had him for over a year and he is eating pellets fine. He doesn't feed live fish. What would you recommend as a good staple pellet for him. I currently have Hikari cichlid gold (which my other cichlids love!). Also, what is the best temp to keep them at. Right now I have it around 81F. He is in my aquaponics setup.

Short bodies I feel are freaks of nature...that's why I had to have one. Mine was a shortbody red texas. Had to make room so he went bye-bye.

Not all pellets are the same but starve him for a few days and he'll eat. I'd stay away from frozen bloodworms & live feeders due to possible parasites. I do feed them freeze dried bloodworms & shrimp occasionally.

I set my tanks at 86 degrees. 81 degrees is fine but I find them more vibrant & active at higher temp.

Oh my, mine is already digging and super active. I'm afraid to see him more active. Maybe I will go to 82 ;) Its been a few hours now, and I think he is finding a few of the pellets I missed when fishing out the uneaten ones! Guess he's happy.

I always thought Flowerhorns were cool, but really never cared to get one. Until I saw this ridiculous thing. It is so stupid looking that I absolutely love it. Seems to have crazy personality already!

I will never understand why people like these, but I respect your want to own one :) I have heard that pellets that are too large can be troublesome in FH since their Gastro-intestinal system is messed up from all the hybridization. But that could be mix, ill let the experts chime in

I know, in my outdoor heated pond I have all the hearty cichlids like the texas and green terror. In my indoor aquaponics setup, I wanted a personality fish that poops a lot to feed my plants (which is soooo over-filtrated :)) This thing is a definite get noticed "freak of nature".....or man-made freak of nature that was just too cool to pass up. I might offend some, but this thing is so ugly its cute. Good color and crazy fins! I am going to name him Cee Lo!

p.s. he ate some of the pellets once they were all saturated in water. I still have the mini size pellets for my other babies in my pond so I don't think the pellets would be too big for him.

I have a Thai silk full body. He's my favorite fish. Huge! Your guy looks like him if I took a cleaver and chopped him in half! Lol. I've never heard of any gastrointestinal issues and mine eats the largest pellets they sell. Full of personality but mean as crap and always hungry. image.jpg not the best pic. But u get the point.

Nice fish!! Yeah, mine seems so mean already and its only been a day.... I have a feeling I'm going to be scared to put my hand in the tank soon! He looks like a biter.

He's freaking cute. I love silks and I love shortbodies. Heres my big male silk again.

For food get smaller nls pellets. Hikari bio gold plus is an excellent floating pellet if he refuses the sinking nls. I always give 1 day a week no feeding or very light feeding to kind of clean them out. Flowerhorns have great personalities, you will love this fish.

I wonder why mine is so dark blue. Most seem lighter in color? I like him either way ;-)
