gars can be trained to eat just about anything, sometimes its really tough, but it can be done. and yeah gars won't eat off the ground. if they aren't hunting it pretty much has to float
you are right about gars being trained to eat anything but wrong about gars not eating from the ground. mine eats shrimps from the bottom of the tank. aros eat on the top.

Gar was still alive when I got home.
tried to feed flakes.

You tried to feed flakes to your Gar?

I don't mean to be mean but I just found that funny. If I offered flakes to my boys they would just look at me with this look they have like "WTF do you think you're doing".

Again man, not to be mean, but these are monster predatory fish not goldfish.

think i'll make sure i pump a gar to somewhat bigger than my current bichirs before mixing them. LFS got new stocks for gars and they are all about the same length where I got mine. I measured my lost gar before I threw him away...about 6cm long.

good luck..

my buddys spotted eats algae pellets from off the ground !!! Only one out of the 2 does it:)

I think they all have their personalities. One only eats floating pellets, one eats only sunken pellets, and another eats only sinking ones. The one that eats sinking pellets however, will eat sinking and sunken beefheart.

Wow, dude!
If you have got a spare tank you might consider Power-feeding your gar.
They got incredible growing abilities, which you can use for the best.
But start out by get the lil' guy to eat.
I started out with guppies when I first got him in the tank.
He wasn't interrested.
Then I got some swordtails and after2 days he ate the biggest one.
Starved him for 3 days and offered a frozen fish, floating, and he took it.
Within 2 weeks he came to eat out of my hand.:D
Now, after one month he eats on the bottom and floating fish, and yesterday snatched one of the algae-wafers of my plecos!
Maybe I will feed some pallets later, but first he just got to grow, man!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

I got myself a new gar!! Awesome for me!! Pump him up first huh? I'll try and do that... I'll be getting a 4ft tank soon to upgrade my 2ft bichir tank. I think when I'm fully set up, I'll pump my gar. Yeah I heard about the growth rate. Somehow I'm worried a 4ft by 2ft might not be enough.

:nilly:i have one i just recued from a pet store he's eating pellet's n not even going for the live minos/guppies.lol idk wtf is going on wit him but i have a feeling it might b cause of his front fin's there realy small almost like they where bitten off but i realy dont know cause this is the smallest ive seen or had n the guy's at the pet store asure me that he arived that way idk what to asume but in the case they where bitten almost clean off on both sides what could i do to bring him back 100% ive been feeding him pellets/krill/dead fish but he dosent seem to whant to feed on live fish ,:nilly:any sudgestions

Get a live feeder like a minnow or a rosy and use a toothpick or something similar and stick it through the minnow near the tail so that he's on there and floppin around. Then present that to your gar on the surface of the water, he should take it right off the stick.... Hopefully.
