Hello everybody, this is my new spotted gar i believe? the tank was labelled spotted gar but im not sure.. i dont know how to tell the difference between gars. Anyways its about 4".. anyway to sex them? my arowana had a few nasty words to say to it yesterday when i put him/her in but didnt do any damage just jumped at it twice and scared the **** outta me LOL. But its a territorial thing and if it gets worse i will move the gar to the 20G till it gets bigger and i can place it back in, but the arowana is 8". Ill have to see, but little guy is FAST. anyways tell me what you think.. male or female and if its a spotted. Thanks :)

Sorry for bad pics its always moving. and its tail has some tears from it jumping from the guy at the lfs trying to get it, cuz it was so fast.:drool:
 
Sorry man, not a true Gar. You can tell because the tail is "Forked".
All true Gar have a "rounded tail".
I think that's one of those pike things, not really sure.
Others will chime in shortly and then you'll know whatcha got.

Also what size tank are they in now?
 
Boulengerella maculata would be the species. "Spotted Pike-characin" would be a more accurate name. Cool fish, gets about 14-16" long.

are you seriouse? im gunna march back to the lfs... that pisses me off man.. stupid BA with their wrong labels. i paid 23$ for that little thing !
 
I dont want a Boulengerella maculata .. i want a gar :( im going to take it back and get a gar.. i had a bad feeling because the shape looked wrong to me.. the way the fins were.. thats why i asked. but damn i went to 3 different stores looking for a gar.. all sold out... i found needle nose gar, but i dont want that. and when i saw the spotted gar sign with gars in the tank i had to smile and beg my dad to buy one.. but its a FAKE so im definitly going to tell them to fix that damn labe.. what if they say im wrong and it is a spotted gar.. what do i say?
 
take some literature or a pic in to show them what a true spotted gar looks like. download a pic from the internet. do not go in with an attitude. just be polite and make your point. any reasonable merchant will return your money or even trade.
 
yeah of course i will be polite, but this store isnt close to home and uses gas there fore costing money just to go there and then to have them false label a fish and make me drive all the way back, its kinda annoying.. But ill probably call and explain to the owner and he will return my money back and take the fish. Im sure they will i just got the fish yesterday.. im pretty sure they have a 7 day return or warantee and all fish. But i think thats the last time ill buy a fish from there.. id rather go across the street where i got my arowana cause they take good care of their fish and dont false label, they were just sold out of spotted gars :(
 
i don't think the incorrect labeling was intentional nor did they meant to deceive. many lfs's just not up to speed on the various species. good luck with the return.
