Man, after reading all again you should just keep it. I mean that poor fish needs a happy home too. Look at him, he's been here he's been there, he's got tattered fins and is probably hungry. Embrace the falseness that is the Boulengerella maculata. I would say keep him and ALSO get a true gar. I am pretty sure they are compatible and as long as you have a respectable sized tank it should be nice.

I wont have the space for 2 "gars" nore can i afford it. It will find a home, trust me, i go to the lfs one day and see them, the next week i go back and they are all gone. and if it was hungry it would eat the food i drop in..i would keep it but i dont have the space or money to buy a seconds real gar.

No offense to you personally but if I ran a business I wouldn't sell something without knowing what it is.

To the OP: Spotted Pike Characins are pretty cool. It will probably max out around 10-12" and keeps its nice pattern all the while. I have one in with my Florida and Arowanas and they don't mind it at all. But congats on the store credit! Nice to see a good, honest LFS.

i don't think the incorrect labeling was intentional nor did they meant to deceive. many lfs's just not up to speed on the various species. good luck with the return.
