My first male dovii, good potential?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine would also eat better if I stepped out of the room. He only started eating in front of me the last couple of days.
its funny you say that, ive been feeding and take about 5 steps backs and he comes out the minute he thinks im not there lol

hello, just an update on my dovii, he's about 9.5 icnhes now( id take a pic but the light broke on the tank so ill put one up next week), still very shy, eats anything lol bug bite pellets, spirilina brine shrimp, blood worms. a few weeks back i had an incident with his 120 gallon tank, long story short i had to find a new tank fast lol so now hes in a 110 gallon, i figure i can leave him in there for at least another 4 inches

The potential of a dovii (or any cichlid for that matter) is how you maintain it.
To me, water changes are the most important factor, and as it grows they must be increased to prevent the water from becoming dovii urine soup, the smaller the tank, the more you will need to do, perhaps 50% daily in your 125 soon.. Although filtration helps, other than bio-media, its mostly just a band-aid.
If you upgrade tank size as it grows, it will also help, and to reach potential , a 300 gallon tank will be needed shortly down the road, and something much larger later.
Take a look at Mels Dovii tanks on youtube and you'll see what makes for a great specimen, and habitat.

Well I would say I do about a 50 % water change weekly, I have an aquaclear 110 and a fluval 406 on the tank , the water stays pretty clean to be honest, I do water tests quite frequently and the nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels are always good, I agree in awhile ill need to get him a bigger thank but I figure I have at least 6 months

Well, dovii are notoriously shy when under 12" long, so I would say don't worry about it too much. Some dither fish may help it to come out more. Convict cichlids might be appropriate. But, the dovii may kill them especially since it is already getting large, in a 110 gallon. I think you would get better growth in something larger, 6 more months sounds like a long time in a 110 at 10" already to me. If it's possible I would be looking for a 300+ for your next upgrade, the fish will definitely need it. It is a good looking dovii, the yellow on the costa Ricans is quite nice.

+1
My dovii had been kept with all sorts of stuff and did alright besides the stuff that she could eat. The silver dollars out ran her and the severum pair fought together. Note: water level was raised for photo

Yeah I might try convicts as either fish whether they get killed or not, just to see if he comes out more, also yeah 6 months may have been generous, but I hope to have the new tank for him realistically for August, once he gets in his new tank I have a female red tiger moto. I may try introducing
