My First Oscar, (advice)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feel compelled to add that whatever that stuff you were adding was or wasn't, you will need a decent dechlorinator to treat any new water during your regular water changes.

Just to add my 2 cents, I have 3 Oscar's in a 125 Gallon with 12X filtration, I still have to do a 30% water change twice a week. And that is if I am feeling lazy... These guys crap turds like a small puppy and if I were to let it go for a month I have a feeling I would have a few dead fish on my hands. My PH is steady at around 7.8, and the fish have adjusted accordingly. They have arranged the tank to their liking and I have managed to make a compromise with them about the live plants I have not being in their way.

I have to say I would have no other fish if I couldn't have my oscar's, they are wonderful. But know what you are committing to before you take on this task.

Yes its normal for an oscar to go on a hunger strike when moved.Odd moody fish. Its also not unheard of for any cichlids to reject a specific food,so you might have to try another brand. One of my cichlids flat out refuses to eat pellets of any kind.

Some of the pellets are disapearing so either there sinking and being eaten by others or shes eating them. Iv seen at least one turd already so its either from what i fed her or from yesterdays petstore feeding before I got her. We have well water so theres nothing harmful like chlorine or anything so I have no worries about that, just the eating problem. What other choices are there other then pellets, they wont eat flakes will they? I know they eat earth worms and such but I would like to stick with pellets if I can and feed the worms every once in awhile.

Its call EasyBalance by Tetra. It says it reduces water changes but I still do water changes everyother week, now more cause of the oscar but on the label it says stablilizes pH and lakalinity levels and reduces nitrates and phophate. It doesnt get rid of chlorine though.

I personally have to use the floating type for the oscars, otherwise there is a huge mess after a feeding. Cichlid Gold is what I use and they love it.

You can feed them live food, but remember there's a chance of introducing parasites to the tank.

My alternative has been to buy freeze-dried (not frozen) reptile food. I buy freeze dried: crickets, earthworms and river shrimp (krill?) and my fish love them as a treat! (the brand is Flukers)

Never had an oscar (my bro had one) but from what I've seen, the bigger the tank, the better!

Good luck !!!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2
